By the Artist

A selection of Barnett Newman’s writings and interviews has been gathered in: Barnett Newman: Selected Writings and Interviews. Ed. John P. O’Neill. Text notes and commentary by Mollie McNickle, introduction by Richard Shiff. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1990.

The volume was issued in paperback by the University of California, Berkeley, in 1992. Translations into German, Spanish, and French have been published by Gachnang & Springer in 1996, Editorial Sintesis in 2006, and Édition Macula in 2011, respectively.

Listed here individually and in chronological sequence are the artist’s published interviews and writings, with cross-references, where applicable, to the above-mentioned collection, herein referred to in abbreviated form as “O’Neill 1992.”

Monographic publications, including solo exhibition catalogues, are assembled in chronological sequence beginning with the catalogue of Newman’s Guggenheim exhibition in 1966, one of only three monographs published during the artist’s lifetime.

Different types of writings with a bearing on Newman and his work are presented in chronological sequence, ranging from monographic essays to reviews of group exhibitions, aiming for completeness concerning records of the critical reaction to Newman’s work early in his career, turning selective in more recent times.
