Barnett Newman’s exhibition history to date includes 48 solo shows and 514 group shows.

Only nine of his solo exhibitions took place during the artist’s lifetime. The first two, at the Betty Parsons Gallery, New York, in 1950 and 1951, respectively, were failures not only in the eyes of critics but of his fellow artists as well. It was not until the end of the decade that Newman had the next opportunity, a retrospective at Bennington College in 1958, followed in 1959 by another survey, organized by Clement Greenberg for the gallery of French & Company, New York. His first, and only, solo exhibition at a museum during his lifetime took place in 1966 at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum: The Stations of the Cross: Lema Sabachthani. The last one, at the gallery of Knoedler & Co in 1969, finally became the success with critics and fellow artists alike that had eluded Newman for most of his career.
